Zen Pinball 2 is one of the prettiest games on the Playstation 4. Basically, it is one of the few native 1080p and 60fps (frames per second) games on the console. This in turn gives you a visually appealing and near-realistic pinball experience. Moreover, the game is a cross between a cinematic feature and an arcade game. Depending on which table you’re playing, you will encounter short cutscenes or animated shorts beforehand. For example, in the Marvel table, you will be treated to a short animation of Ironman flying in the sky and landing on one of the play areas.
Speaking of tables, unfortunately, not everything is unavailable after downloading it. You need to purchase tables with real money, and the themes are based on different franchises. For example, there are tables themed with Bethesda games, with images and graphics of the popular Fallout games. Furthermore, there are also Plants vs Zombie tables, Star Wars and Marvel-themed ones.
These tables are worth a purchase for hardcore pinball fans. Every detail on the tables are well-crafted and you will barely find anything negative with regard to their design. If you’re not willing to spend extra to buy them, you can always try out the demos instead. Zen Pinball does have framerate issues whenever it shows its full array of visual effects. Nevertheless, you won’t find it bothersome at all - it’s only noticeable to people with keener eyes and only lasts a few seconds long, after all.
The controls are simple and intuitive. Press L1 and R1 to control the sticks, and the left analog button will enable you to nudge the table. Everything is responsive: there are no delays on the sticks even on multiplayer games. Speaking of multiplayer, there are several modes ranging from splitscreen multiplayer so you can play at home with a friend, or a worldwide matchmaking wherein you can play against someone from across the world.
